Today is International Women's Day and the theme for this year's campaign is #EmbraceEquity
On #IWD2023 and beyond, everyone, everywhere can help forge an inclusive world. And how can we do this? One way is by fully embracing equity. A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society's DNA.
What is Equity?
It is critical to understand the difference between equality and equity.
Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.
Equity on the other hand recognises that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.
There is a saying that goes thus; "Equality is giving everyone a shoe, Equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits."
The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about "Why equal opportunities aren't enough." People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.
Gains are being made for women worldwide, but there's more to do. Collectively, we can all challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias and seek out inclusion.
Forging gender equity isn't limited to women solely fighting the good fight. Allies are incredibly important for the social, economic, cultural, and political advancement of women
Each one of us can actively support and embrace equity within our own sphere of influence.
Embrace Equity at school
Embrace Equity in business
Embrace Equity at home
Embrace Equity in mind & action
Embrace Equity in Government
Embrace Equity in communities
Equality is the goal, and equity is the means to get there. Through the process of equity, we can reach equality and we all have a part to play.
Let's embrace equity to create places and spaces where women thrive.
